Our Switch to Organic Mattresses and Bedding

After my battle with breast cancer, one of the areas in our home that we wanted to “clean up” was the bedroom. (Alright, alright, it’s not what you think. Geez!) We had heard that mattresses can be filled with toxic chemicals and harmful flame retardants, and we knew we wanted to switch out what we had with a cleaner option. We also wanted to do a full sheet rehaul and find something on the safer/organic side.

This process felt a little overwhelming at first, so we started with replacing our mattress. After researching different brands of organic mattresses we landed on Savvy Rest. Not only were we liking what we were reading about it, but they had a dealer a few hours away from us so we could actually try them out. Buying mattresses online can be risky and a bit intimidating for the investment that you put into them, so you want to make sure they’re right for you. Thankfully, a lot of companies have great return policies, but we didn’t want to mess with that.

When we visited the store, we learned that these mattresses are “built” to fit your preferences by stacking three different thickness of foam on top of each other. Then these layers are zipped into an organic casing to create the “mattress”. The really convenient thing is you can customize each side of the bed based on each sleepers’ firmness preference. It’s simply choosing the type of thickness and then layering them in the order that feels most comfortable to you.

My husband and I like our mattress to be firm, but soft to the “touch” so we layered both of our sides with a “firm” layer on the bottom, followed by the “medium” layer, and “soft” on the top. These can be switched around to give you the perfect feel. We have found that the latex is not only comfortable, but it absorbs movement, so when my husband rolls over or gets into bed, I don’t feel like I’m going to be launched to the other side of the room!

Why is an organic mattress a healthier option? Some mattresses can contain toxic flame retardants, benzene and formaldehyde, just to name a few. These chemicals have been linked to infertility, developmental disorders, asthma, and cancer. The off-gassing of these chemicals is surrounding you when you sleep, and just think about how many hours you spend in your bed! (Some nights, not enough for me!)

The Savvy Rest mattress is made of natural latex which is crafted from responsibly sourced, sustainable rubber tree sap. The natural latex is very durable and can often last 20 years or longer. The other great feature is that it is biodegradable and can also be recycled. For more information check out their mattresses HERE

After we got the mattress figured out we switched out our sheets to an organic option as well. There are so many great organic sheet brands out there, but we landed on the Coyuchi brand. We like the Cloud Soft Organic Sheet Set because it’s super soft and cool when you sleep. It also won “The Knot Registry Award” for 2023. You can check them out for yourself HERE

Coyuchi only produces organic cotton bedding versus bamboo because there isn’t an organic certification for bamboo products yet. Their cotton is certified 100% organic so it’s not exposed to toxic chemicals and pesticides.

We love our mattress and bedding and always look forward to sleeping in our own bed when we come home from traveling. Our girls now have their own Savvy Rest mattresses and I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to take them to college with them. Seriously. They love them as much as we do.

Not only are our beds comfortable, and the mattresses are long-lasting, but this switch is one more small way that we can protect our family from toxic environmental exposures that could be harmful. And THAT makes me sleep much better each night.
